With ardent desire to be more competitive and confident in the pursuit of their duties, swimming coaches of the CALABARZON banded to form the Southern Tagalog Swimming Coaches Association (STASCA) in year 2000 with the following objectives:

»
To promote long term development of swimmers so they can achieve their fullest potentials and sustain their interest in competitive swimming, and not just focusing on short term/immediate results
»
To establish a well-organized association of coaches.
»
To produce more quality swimmers.
According to Coach Omar Paredes, the first STASCA president, they intend to share knowledge and skills acquired from local and international swimming seminars, extend a hand to senior coaches who are less technically equipped when it comes to using computers, alleviate the standards of coaching by appraisal of coaches twice a year, build camaraderie and solidarity among coaches and share experiences and advices among coaches.

Since inception, STASCA has successfully started the Long Term Athlete Development ( LTAD) training to adhere to PASA’s directive in producing Class “A” swimmers. Also, a Team Manager Training/Seminar has been conducted among coaches to be able to adapt to the present PASA system in conducting competitions, and the database filing of swimmers and competition results for easy retrieval.

Their on-going project is the International Lifesaving (ILS) Training (Special Swim and Survive Course for Coaches) that will provide participants with skills and knowledge of aquatic safety, rescue and survival skills techniques. The training also aims at providing participants the necessary skills and knowledge to qualify for the ILS Bronze Medallion, an internationally recognized minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. Also, it has provided accident insurance among coaches with assistance from STASA to secure coaches financial stability when an unexpected incident befalls the family. Strength and conditioning training is also being provided to keep them always fit for the job that supports their everyday life.

In preparation for the coming ILS seminar, the STASA coaches participated in the recent Blue Fins Fun Aquathlon (May 8, 2010, UPLB) to enhance their fitness in preparation for the ILS Training come June and July 2010. A Moral Development training/seminar is also being eyed for coaches to overcome bothering stress.
